Bernice Elizabeth Heffley, age 82 of Denton, TX, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 after a long struggle with Parkinson's. She was at her home surrounded by family.
Bernice was born in Ft. Worth, TX to L.D. and Nida (Smith) Lewis. She was the only daughter out of 12 children, and a TRUE miracle child. At the age of 5, she was accidentally run over by a car that her Dad had put into neutral and was backing out of their driveway. She didn't hear it, and it knocked her over and the tire ran up her spine and stopped between her shoulders. Once the car was removed from her back, her Dad lifted her in his arms, with blood flowing from her eyes, ears, mouth, and nose, and prayed "Father, You promised You'd never put anything on me that I could not handle. Well..., I cannot handle the thought of killing my only daughter!" And with that, she raised up and put her arms around her Dad's neck and asked Where am I?". After a trip to the hospital, and only one night stay, it was determined that nothing was injured or broken and she was released to go home. Her Father was a minister who planted churches. They traveled often, causing her to have to attend a different school every year, however, she graduated from Gainesville High School at the age of 16.
She was married to Robert Daniel (Dan) Heffley on January 26, 1952 in Ft. Worth, TX. They had 4 children: Louis Dewayne Heffley and wife Kathy (Billingsley) Heffley of Columbia, SC., Trisha (Patricia Jeanette Heffley) Lozano and husband Frank Lozano of Denton, TX., Kenneth Robert (Ken) Heffley and his wife Susan (Anderson) Heffley of Dripping Springs, TX., and
Stephen Wade Heffley and his wife Jennifer (Wilder) Heffley of Prosper, TX. They had 8 grandchildren: Jennifer (Lozano) Brinkman and husband Cory Brinkman, Rocky Lozano and wife Amy (Nelson) Lozano, Nicole (Heffley) Larson and husband Nathan Larson, Haley (Heffley) Callarman and husband Adam Callarman, Corey Heffley and wife Chelsea (McIlvain) Heffley, Shane Heffley, Alyssa Heffley, and Caitlin Heffley. And 10 great-grandchildren: Maddie, Zachry, Tanner, Noel, Bella, Lucy, Brody, Keith, MacLean, and Landon.
She was preceded in death by her parents: L.D. and Nida Lewis, and 7 brothers: Theodore Lewis, Chesley Lewis, L.D. Lewis (Jr.), Raymond Lewis, Elton Lewis, Howard Lewis, Bobby Lewis. She has 4 brothers remaining: Arvil and wife Doris Lewis of Keller, TX, Joe and Gay Nell Lewis of Ft. Worth, TX, Monroe Lewis and his wife Mercedes Lewis of Pearland, TX, and Charlie Lewis of Ft. Worth, TX. She has a myriad of nieces and nephews as well as "adopted children".
She was an employee of Dr. R. John Nelson, Orthodontist in Denton from 1972 until 1991. She was a long time member of Denton Bible Church, where she served along side her husband, Dan, as an Elder's wife, Bible Study Leaders and went on several short term mission trips including Russia, Argentina, and Ecuador. She loved her family. She spent her life along side her husband doing everything they could to help their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren. She LOVED holidays and made Christmas magical for her kids! She always wanted her family with her for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and any other time during the year, and she was a wonderful cook. She never missed celebrating a birthday or anniversary if at all possible with and for her family! Her family all loved her very much and she will be greatly missed! Until we meet again Mom! We love you!
