June 04, 1937 - August 27, 2018

Dr. Carrol O. Calkins of Tequesta, Fl passed away on August 27,2018. He is survived by his loving wife Janice and his two daughters Debra (Dan) Rancour and Lori (John) Houchin as well as his Grandchildren Rebecca Sibberson, Stephen Rancour, Haley Houchin, JC Houchin, his great grandchild Taylor Sibberson and his sister Sharon Calkins Heinrich .
Carrol was born on June 4, 1937 to Glenn and Nell Calkins in Sioux Falls, SD. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. Carrols dream was to work in wild life management, but he found a home instead with the study of Entomology at the US Department of Agriculture. After graduation from South Dakota State University he went to Lincoln, Nebraska where he received his masters degree. Job transfers brought him to Gainesville, Florida in 1972 where he also completed his PHD. Carrol accepted a temporary position with the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria to work on the eradication of the Mediterranean fruit fly. This opportunity was the first of many requests for him to consult on fruit fly control throughout the world. Carrols last assignment of his 40 year career was in Yakima, Washington managing an ARS research facility supporting the apple industry.
Upon his retirement, Carrol felt his native South Dakota calling. He and Janice returned to their beloved state and enjoyed many years there before settling in Tequesta, Fl to be close to family. A small family service is planned to celebrate Carrols life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Carrols name to New Day Adult Care Center, 301 Ebbtide Drive Suite H, North Palm Beach, Fl 33408.
