Lt. Col. Richard's Story
Lt. Col. Richard Dwight Buttolph, (USMC, Ret) joined the heavenly ranks on May 26, 2017. He was an Iowa boy, born to Col. Loren Dwight and Lillian Osgood Buttolph on June 17, 1933. Dick served his country for 20 years ; including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He married Betty Elaine Yarbrough of Gainesville on June 4, 1954. They were married 50 years. Their children, David Dwight (Gainesville) and Bonnie Kay (Dallas) ask that you join them in celebrating his life on his 84th birthday. He will be interned with Betty, June 17, 2017 9: 30 a.m. Fairview Cemetery, with an 11:00 a.m. service at 1st United Methodist Church of Gainesville. Reception to follow.
Dick graduated from New Mexico Military Institute, Roswell, NM in 1954. He began his military career in September of that year. He served as the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Amtrac Battalion (850 officers) of Camp Del Mar, Oceanside, CA.
In 1974, Dick and Betty moved to Gainesville, Texas and resided on Denton Street. He was active in the FUMC; member of Rotary, American Legion, helped establish S. Gainesville Historic District, active in Gainesville real estate, RE appraiser and tax assessor. He began RDB Land Services performing oil and gas asset management.
He married Shirley MacLaughlin of Oklahoma in 2005. They spent their days on the road in their multiple RVs seeing the entire U.S.
He leaves behind his children, Bonnie and David, granddaughter, Jenna Eloise, Shirley, her two children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed by many.
