M.A. (Marsha) Maxell McGee

M.A. (Marsha) Maxell McGee left this life on October 23, 2018. Marsha was born October 27, 1933 to Mae and Kile Maxell in Waldron, Arkansas. She helped her parents on the farm and attended school in Waldron. When she was 15, she met her husband John McGee and married him when she was 16. They farmed until he went to work in the oilfield. With two children in tow, she followed him to wherever the work was. They lived in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Montana, New Mexico and back to Texas. After their third daughter was born, she began working on her college education and didn't stop even while moving yet once again. Education was very important to her and she made sure all of her daughters got their college degrees as well. In 1974 she completed her degree with a certification in education. She began teaching that same year teaching elementary school in Odessa, Texas and taught for fourteen years before retiring with her husband. They enjoyed traveling around the states and to England. She loved traveling to visit her eight grandsons in various parts of the country. John and Marsha were married 65 years.
Marsha was known to everyone as a fabulous cook and often treated people with many of her specialties. She volunteered at the Stanford House in Gainesville for many years where her baked creations were auctioned to raise money for the facility. Even the boys who mowed her lawn always left with a bag of her delicious cookies. Her grandchildren lovingly referred to her as their cookie Nana. At Christmas, she would make everyone's favorite cookies often having at least 20 different kinds.
Throughout her life, she was a Girl Scout leader, accomplished seamstress, beloved teacher and devoted wife and Mother. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gainesville.
Marsha was preceded in death by her husband, John, granddaughter, Shannon, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her daughters, Sherian Newby of Gainesville, Texas, Jeanne Bayer of Piedmont, Oklahoma and Susan Smits of Colleyvile, Texas, eight grandsons, 23 great-grandchildren and her sister Estee Larson of Sherman, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2018, at Meador Funeral Home Chapel, Gainesville, Texas. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Stanford house in Gainesville, Texas.
