Peggy Meek Broyles, 1926 - 2016
January 27, 1926 was a good day to be born in Love County, OK when Margaret Raum Meek and Finis C. Meek welcomed their first daughter, Peggy Jo, into the family. Peggy grew up on family farms caring for her siblings and formed a deep connection with the land. Upon graduation from Marietta High School in 1944, Peggy moved to Fort Worth to attend business school and worked until she married Edwin C. Shaw on June 21, 1947. After their daughter Mildred arrived, Peggy became a stay-at-home mom, active in Camp Fire Girls, PTA and her church until her husband's death in 1968.
For the next six years, Peggy worked as a secretary at TCU until she moved to Austin to be near her daughter. There, she married Col. Enoch E. Broyles on August 7, 1976 and assumed the role of mother to his five children. A year later, Peggy and Enoch moved to Denton where she worked as a secretary at TWU in the O.T. Department.
In 1984, Peggy and Enoch retired to Lake Kiowa and enjoyed hosting family reunions, holidays, birthdays, and gatherings with friends. Peggy liked fishing, boating, and playing bingo and cards in the community. They were active members of Whaley United Methodist Church in Gainesville. When Enoch's health failed in 2000, they moved to Good Samaritan Village in Denton.
Surrounded by family and having declared the circle complete, Peggy died on August 23, 2016 in Denton, Texas. She is survived by her daughter Millie and husband Jack Foster of Sugarland, TX as well as by her stepchildren: Charles Shaw and wife Rita of Memphis, TN; Mary Shaw Griffin of Gentry, AR; Billy Walker and wife Janice of Lucas, TX; Jan Ronan of Marion, OH; Steve Broyles and wife Kay of Muenster, TX; Jeff Broyles and life partner Sheila Murray of Pacifica, CA; Beth Honeycutt and husband Randy of Denton, TX; and Jennifer Maples of Denton, TX. Peggy also has nieces and nephews, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who sweetly refer to her as "Grandma Candy." She is predeceased by her husbands, Edwin Shaw and Enoch Broyles; her sister Mary Dilks; and her brother Roy Meek.
Memorial services will be held in Cole Chapel at First United Methodist Church, Denton at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 as well as at Good Samaritan on Hinkle Drive, Denton at 4:00 p.m. that same day.
Donations in memoriam are welcomed at FUMC-Denton as well as at the Salvation Army.
