Sandra Kay Alsup, 75, of Midland TX, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home of Midland. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am on Friday, February 23, 2018.
Sandra was born on July 13, 1942 in Texas City, Texas to Vella Mae and Clarence Hazel. She graduated from Gainesville High School in Gainesville, TX in 1960, and received a nursing diploma from Wichita General Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita Falls, TX in 1962. While completing a psychiatry rotation in Austin, she met the love of her life. Jim and Sandy were married in 1963, and moved to Midland in 1964. She was a long time registered nurse practicing in several settings, but her passion was working in surgery at Midland Memorial Hospital. She worked in the field until the late 1980s when arthritis finally made the work too difficult.
Sandy gave generously of her time to several Midland organizations, including Midland Memorial Hospital, Midland Junior League, Community Children's Clinic and First Presbyterian Church, where she served as both a deacon and an elder as well as a Stephen Minister. She was an avid sports fan, and played tennis as long as her hands would let her. She rarely missed a grandchild's game or meet, and loved the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. Sandy and Jim travelled the world together, spending time with life-long friends and making new ones along the way.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Alsup; sons, J. Devin Alsup and sons Briggs and Brady; Jeff Alsup and wife, Lynn and daughters Clare, Anna and Lucy; a brother, Clegg Hazel and wife, Jean; brothers-in-law Bill Alsup and Jack Filler; and cousins Vicki Stewart and Sally Hazel. In addition she is survived by nine loving nieces and nephews and their families.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Vella Mae and Clarence Hazel.
The family would like to express their gratitude towards the staff of Home Hospice for their work during her rapid decline.
