Joy Humphries Obituary

Joy Genece (Flowers) Ware Humphries, 87, of Gainesville, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at a hospital in Decatur, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. She succumbed to complications from pneumonia. A private family service was held to celebrate her life.

She was born on January 9, 1933, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Lawrence Lee "LL" and Bertha Irene (Spiva) Flowers. Joy was the youngest of three children and the third great-granddaughter of American folk hero David "Davy" Crockett. The family moved to Gainesville, Texas, where she attended Robert E. Lee Elementary and Gainesville High School. She also participated in the Gainesville Community Circus as an aerialist.

We fondly remember her as a fantastic Country Western dancer, a Cub Scout and Camp Fire Leader of rowdy kids from Edison Elementary, a bowling champion, an avid reader of mysteries and romance novels, an admirer of elephants and the color purple, an enthusiastic poker player, and a lover of all the cats and kittens she cared for. Her sense of humor, generosity, and joy of life are traits we hope to share with others.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James "Jimmy" and Larry Flowers; her first husband, Rayburn Owen Ware and their eldest son, Morgan Ray Ware; her grandchildren, Ray and Pamela Ware; and her second husband and beloved dancing partner, Clifton Humphries.

She is survived by her children, Timothy Owen Ware and wife Carol of Poetry, Texas; Sandra (Ware) Powers of Arkansas; and Peggy J. (Ware) Kerr White Dunn and husband Robert of Valley View, Texas; seven grandchildren, Season and Delaney Kerr, Lindsey White; Sterling Powers; Heather Ware and Amanda (Ware) Wilson; Christine (Ware) Power; and seven great-grandchildren.

We all miss her very much.
