Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Evelyn (Hofbauer) Hermes, age 88, of Gainesville will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rosary and vigil will be held at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Scott Funeral Chapel in Muenster.
Mary Evelyn was born on May 1, 1931 in Muenster to Clement Maria and Helen Frances (Keiss) Hofbauer. She married Clement William Hermes on February 13, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muenster.
After William was discharged from the service, he and Mary Evelyn made their home in the community of Hood. There, they became members of the Hood Community Club where Mary Evelyn serviced as secretary for 50 years. She enjoyed her work and time with the members of the community. Especially when the Hood Turkey Supper came along.
The light of Mary Evelyn's life was family. With a large family came a large garden and long days of canning where her children ate the food just about as fast as she could can it. Especially when canning peaches. She enjoyed the holidays when the house was full of grandchildren and then great grandchildren.
Mary Evelyn was a farmer's wife which meant that she too drove the tractor, worked with the cattle, and everything else that needed to be done on the farm. Many of those who worked for William knew Mary Evelyn as 'mother'; she loved hearing them call her Mother.
Mary Evelyn enjoyed many things such as playing dominos with friends and collecting dolls, of which she had many. She became close to her caregivers during the time they stayed with her and we know she would like to tell them thanks for their care and love. Mary Evelyn passed away on Monday, October 7, 2019.
Mary Evelyn is survived by daughters: Alyce and husband Charles Cler of Lindsay, Debbie Bradshaw of Gainesville, Cheryl and husband Royce Martin of Gainesville; Denise West of Muenster, Laurie Rohmer of Fort Worth, Pam and husband Kenneth Sidwell of Muenster; sons: Gary Hermes of Ponder, Tim Hermes of Keller, Glenn and wife Misty Hermes of Keller; 16 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and brothers: Dale and wife Dolores Hofbauer of Muenster, and Dennis and wife Norma Jean Hofbauer of Muenster.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents: Clem and Helen Hofbauer; and sister: Irma Fuhrmann.
