Milton O'Dell
Milton Donald O'Dell
A memorial service for Milton Donald O'Dell, 80, of Gainesville, is set for 11:00AM Saturday, December 21st at the Faith Lutheran Church in Gainesville with Pastor Paul Terral officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Milton was born on January 25, 1939 in Syracuse, New York, to Milton Edgar O'Dell and Dorothy Ruth (Van Patten) O'Dell. If asked to tell you a story from his life, he would tell you about the time he played for Queen Elizabeth with the 82nd Airborne Division band in 1957, or possibly the way he wound up in the Army in the first place- and not the Marines, which is where he'd been headed- after a photo of a paratrooper caught his eye. He marched with the Salvation Army brass band in several Rose Parades over the years, which was one of the great highlights of his musical life. Service to others was true to Milt's nature. He was a veteran both of the Army and the Los Angeles Police Department, where he worked for 25 years to keep his community safe. After leaving California for Texas, he continued his career in public service as a jailer for the Cooke County Sheriff's Department until he retired in 2004. In retirement, he stepped easily into his role as house husband and doting grandfather, and was a dedicated caretaker and friend to his horses, dog and cats- including his best friend, Squeaky. He was an avid football fan and brownie enthusiast (his daughter's in particular). He was endlessly generous with his friends and family and could always be counted upon to have your best interest at heart. He passed away on December 11, 2019 in Sherman- moving on to the next big adventure and leaving all of us to miss him terribly for the rest of ours.
Milton is survived by his wife, Kari O'Dell of Gainesville; favorite daughter Pamela Joy O'Dell of Midlothian; son Gregory Wade O'Dell of Venus; son Kevin Andrew O'Dell Sr. and his wife Liz of Torrance, California; son Christopher Donald O'Dell and his wife Jen of Gainesville; grandchildren Victor Medina, Jeffrey Medina, Steffanie Medina Sitton, Breanna O'Dell, Kevin O'Dell Jr., Max O'Dell, and Anthony Chacon; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Judy Hoffman and her husband Jerry of Frisco; sister Nancy Jean O'Dell of Heber Springs, Arkansas; and brother Stephen O'Dell and his wife Connie of Torrance, California. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to Faith Lutheran Church in Gainesville.
